As UX/UI designers, we hold the power to shape how users feel, interact, and connect with digital products.
In the fast-paced world of user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design, it's easy to get lost in the whirlwind of trends, technologies, and best practices. However, if you want to create products and interfaces that truly resonate with users, the journey from a blank canvas to a polished product is an intricate dance between the cognitive and affective aspects of design.
Everything you do has both a cognitive and an affective component - cognitive to assign meaning, affective to assign value
(Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday Things, Don A. Norman)
Don Norman's wisdom in "Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday Things" serves as the guiding principle for the daily life of UX/UI designers. This mantra, further divided into the three pillars of visceral, behavioral, and reflective design, shapes the very essence of our work.
Visceral Design - Appearance: Crafting the First Impression
Think of visceral design as the grand opening of a play - the curtains rise, and the audience's
immediate reaction sets the stage for the entire performance.

In UX/UI, this is the 'love at first sight' moment when users first encounter a product. It's that immediate "Wow!" or "Ugh..." that users feel when they land on a website or open an app.
This rapid judgment is driven by an emotional response to the visual appearance, setting the tone for the entire user experience.
The color schemes, typography, and visual elements we choose are not just superficial aesthetics. They carry a profound emotional weight, influencing the initial impression users form. It's not just about looking good; it's about evoking the right emotional response. Studies have shown that it takes a mere 50 milliseconds for users to form an opinion about your website or product. This means that the interface you choose is a powerful tool for setting the emotional tone.
In our daily lives as designers, this means carefully selecting color palettes and fonts, understanding how they resonate with our target audience's emotions, and creating a visual identity that aligns with the brand's values and user expectations. It's about creating interfaces that immediately engage and resonate.
Behavioral Design - Pleasure and Effectiveness: Form Follows Function

The behavioral layer - It's here that functionality, usability, and the user's emotional journey converge. The pleasure and effectiveness of use matter just as much as the visual appeal.
A well-designed product is not only visually pleasing but also functionally efficient. The user experience should be smooth, intuitive, and satisfying. The affective state of users, whether positive or negative, can significantly impact how they interact with the product and make decisions.
In our daily work, we aim to understand our users' needs, behaviors, and pain points. Through rigorous testing, feedback loops, and continuous improvement, we strive to create digital experiences that are not just eye candy but also a joy to use.
Positive user experiences have a direct impact on business success. Research by the Nielsen Norman Group has shown that a dollar invested in improving the user experience can yield up to a $100 return. This statistic highlights the direct correlation between functional, user-friendly designs and the bottom line.
Reflective Design - Self-Image, Personal Satisfaction, Memories: Leaving a Lasting Impression
Reflective design, the final layer, encapsulates the lasting impact of our work. It's about the self-image users derive from their interactions, the personal satisfaction they experience, and the memories they carry forward.

In our everyday tasks, we must consider the long-term user journey. How will our product shape the user's self-image? Will it leave them satisfied and craving for more? What memories will it etch in their minds?
We create interfaces that tell stories, that resonate emotionally with users, and form deep connections. It's about crafting experiences that not only serve a function but also leave a mark on users' lives. This is where the affective state and the emotional aspects of design come to life, ensuring that users remember and return to the products we've crafted. A beautifully designed product that not only solves problems but also resonates emotionally with the user can lead to lasting loyalty. Consider the apps and websites you remember the most - they probably have an emotional connection with you.
Creating an emotional connection through design is vital for leaving a lasting impression. Whether it's a unique feature, a personalized interaction, or simply a well-crafted narrative, it's these elements that shape the user's perception and loyalty.
The heart of user experience design lies in understanding the cognitive and affective components of our work. From the initial impression (visceral design) to the functional efficacy (behavioral design) and the lasting emotional connection (reflective design), we have the power to craft experiences that resonate on both a cognitive and emotional level, leaving users with meaningful memories and a sense of value.
