Design a profile page for a tunnel-boring company
(design challenge)
I started design challenges and design exercises to:
• Understand how other designs approach problems.
• Explore ideas and innovate.
• Boost my problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
I accepted it and did not request another one for multiple reasons. As soon as I saw the challenge, I had a bunch of questions popping up in my mind, questions that I had to research and find an answer to.
-
What is tunnel boring?
-
What problem are they trying to solve?
-
What is their audience?
-
What are some important elements of a company's profile page?
-
Who is the company and what are they doing?
-
Why are the tunnels important?
-
How can I, the designer, bring functionality and meaning to the page, taking into consideration the business goals and users' needs?
Asking these questions would ensure I know the overall direction, strategy, and required information to progress into the later stages of a design project.
Researching and getting to know the business better, its goals, its belief system, and its vision help me design a useful page and convey the business goals into a valuable design for both the business and its users.
My research about the business and its purpose led me here:
Underground complex road networks are under development in the world due to the growing concentration of the population in large urban areas. The high occupation on the surface, the extension of the perimeter of the metropolises, and the growing demand for travel and mobility lead naturally and inevitably to the development of underground facilities.
Tunnels improve travel times and interconnect areas or bypass obstructions. Tunnels are good and making them faster and cheaper is a big help. The boring company is working to improve the tunnel construction speed by providing a complete one-stop-shop solution with their products like the loop transport system.
Now that I know what the business is about, what they are doing, and what problems they are solving, I need to establish the purpose of the profile page.
The purpose of designing the company's profile page is to let the stakeholders and potential stakeholders, their audience, understand who the company is and what they do. It should include such aspects as a mission and vision statement, industry and products, and contact info (including social media).
A company's profile page serves multiple purposes and two primary ones are to attract investors for funding opportunities and to connect with the customers.

My takeaways from this exploration are:
- know well who are you designing for: their goals and mission, their products, and their audience
- visuals and interactions are as important as the copy of the page
- how will the elements of the page interact with each other and with the outside world (the end-users)
- what information will be managed, stored, and presented
- what are the main functional elements of the page's architecture
- prioritize the research process
